The Perfect Gift For: Your Favorite Bookworm

Food Fiction – There are lots of novels based around food and cooking. I can recommend two that I’ve read: Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel and Sweet Love by Sarah Strohmeyer.

Like Water for Chocolate is a Mexican love story told in monthly installments that blends traditional recipes, magical realism, and a pinch of sex and melodrama. Sweet Love is a more modern love story about both family and romance, in which a mother tries to set up her grown daughter with an old crush through a dessert-cooking class; it also includes dessert recipes. If the person you’ve got in mind is a cook, these novels would be a fun alternative to a cookbook, but even if he or she isn’t, the books offer great stories that are a treat by themselves.
